Mallick Ghat Flower Market, Kolkata

21 December, 2014: On my 3rd and final day in Kolkata, I decided to explore Howrah Bridge and its neighborhood. Mallick Ghat Flower Market lies close to one end of Howrah Bridge. The market is open 24 hours a day and is considered as one of the largest flower markets in India. But do not expect any big stalls and shops selling flowers. Trade takes place along the narrow lanes of the market and in tiny makeshift stalls. Mallick Ghat Flower Market is more of a common man’s place rather than a tourist attraction. I decided to take quick candid photos using my mobile rather than with my DSLR as I felt the latter may intimidate the people.

  1. Brilliant Sreejith! The result images from your mobile phone look awesome. I understand it would be intimidating to take pictures in this area with DSLR…I has similar feeling as well when visiting such places in my home country. Great documentary pictures!

  2. Some wonderful pics there. I particularly like the first one, with the woman squeezing past, the man with the red roses, and the man sitting with the baskets of red and white flowers. Thanks for sharing these images.
