Black & white gallery: Life at Loktak Lake | Manipur, Northeast India

The first day of 2015 began well. I started my journey to Moirang town from Imphal in the early morning; en route I took a short detour to visit  to Loktak lake which is famous for its circular Phumdis, commonly known as Athampum. Though this lake is a biodiversity hotspot with numerous lifeforms calling it home, my attention was drawn towards the humans who depend on this lake for their livelihood. Families of fishermen live on the islands of this lake. Motor boats ensure the connectivity of the islands. The lake is naturally very popular among the locals as a picnic spot. A short ferry ride took me to a nearby island having a low hill which provided better view of the Phumdis. Effects of human intervention on the lake is sadly visible but for this post let’s just concentrate on the local faces.
